Professional athletes are celebrated for possessing extraordinary physical abilities, as well as the incomparable mental toughness necessary to succeed in competitive athletics. With so much attention placed on their seemingly superhuman abilities, it should be no surprise that there’s previously been a stigma about athletes sharing their mental health struggles and appearing weak and vulnerable to their fan base.

Recently, some of the world’s greatest athletes, including Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, Lindsey Vonn, and Michael Phelps have shared their mental health struggles and provided new insight into the pressures placed on elite athletes. Because these athletes fearlessly shared their mental health and performance anxiety struggles, the world is much more aware of the mental side of sports.

Sports psychologists study the impact of psychological factors on athletic performance, exercise, and physical activity. They also help athletes utilize psychology to improve their athletic performance and mental wellness. In his most recent podcast, How Sports Psychology Helps Athletes and Performers, Dr. Cole sits down with Lauren Loberg, Ph.D., a mental health counselor and sports psychology consultant. Dr. Loberg shares her experience as a UCLA student-athlete, coach, researcher, and consultant to top athletes.

This week’s episode of the Sports Medicine Weekly podcast is a can’t miss!
