When school-aged children get very involved in a sport, the problem of balancing schoolwork arises. It can be an impossible task to combine frequent long training sessions, trips to competitions, and everyday schoolwork, so it’s important to balance and prioritize. Here are five tips to help students successfully combine academics, sports, and social life.

1. Organize your day.

The importance of a schedule can’t be overemphasized, but while a schedule is significant, there isn’t one that works for everyone. For some students, an old-fashioned notebook organizer or day planner is the perfect tool. Some, however, prefer digital tools such as a Google or smart phone calendar so they don’t have to carry around a notebook, and they can change plans without needing a pen. No matter which tool you choose, consider using a planner to help visualize your schedule, do the planning, and prioritize much easier.

2. Don’t plan more than you can do.

The best way to find out how productive you are (and can be) is to write down everything you do throughout the day and track how long it takes to complete a particular task, whether working out or showering. Once you’ve done this for several days, you’ll have a more realistic picture of how you’re doing on various tasks. You’ll also be able to notice things that take up too much of your time (like TV shows or social media) and minimize the time you spend on them daily. Then try to plan your daily tasks accordingly. For example, if you know that working out makes you tired, try to plan your activities before them. Don’t forget to monitor your reactions as well.

3. Prioritize

Even if you learn how to plan properly, there’s still a chance that you’ll run into too many competing and conflicting tasks. Even the most organized students sometimes find it challenging to multi-task. Sometimes the ability to prioritize correctly and quickly helps students avoid these situations.

4. Work harder.

Many students tend to put off studying until the last minute. Maybe you are one of them, maybe not. Procrastination is a bad habit for a variety of reasons. It can increase your stress level and even lower the quality of your work. Athletes understand that the more they train, the better the results will be. It’s the same with studying: the more time you spend on a task, the better it will be.

5. Don’t forget to rest.

After all, the whole purpose of planning is to finish the most important tasks early and rest afterward, right? But it’s not that simple.
