In this week’s episode of the Sports Medicine Weekly Podcast, Dr. Brian Cole is joined by former NFL Safety and Broadcaster Solomon Wilcots to discuss advancements in cartilage restoration.

Osteoarthritis is the degeneration of articular cartilage, which is estimated by the CDC to affect 1 in 4 Americans annually. Over the course of his 20+ year career, Dr. Cole has focused on improving and advancing cartilage restoration, currently serving as the head of cartilage restoration for Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush University Medical Center.

Dr. Cole has helped pioneer numerous cartilage restoration treatment options, and most recently helped develop a procedure called MACI, which stands for Matrix-induced autologous chondrocyte implantation. MACI is a two-stage surgical procedure that uses the patient’s cells and chondrocytes to create novel, durable knee tissue. In this week’s episode of the Sports Medicine Weekly Podcast, Dr. Cole and our special guest, Solomon Wilcots, break down the science behind MACI, discussing the indications for treatment, its use, and why it works.

Additionally, Dr. Cole and Solomon recap Super Bowl LVI and discuss the unfortunate injuries that affected some players such as Odell Beckham Jr. Be sure to tune into this week’s episode of the Sports Medicine Weekly Podcast.
